Moldova Refuses Entry to Romanians Calling for Reunification
Organizer George Simion told Moldova’s Radio Chisinau on Monday the border shouldn’t exist and that officials "wanted to separate Moldovans from Romanians, as if we weren’t the same country, the same people."
Moldova united with Romania in 1918 and was annexed to the Soviet Union in 1940. It gained independence in 1991.
Border police spokeswoman Raisa Novitchi said authorities banned the marchers because "they would have disturbed public order."
The Romanians began their "Centenary March" march in Romania on July 1. Simion says the group is determined to reach the Moldovan capital, Chisinau, in time to hold the reunification rally on Saturday.
