Moldova’s economy records growth above expectations in second quarter of 2019

Moldova has registered an economic advance of 5.8 per cent, on the gross series, in the second quarter of 2019 compared to similar period of 2018, exceeding the expectations of analysts and officials, who bet on an increase of 3.4 – 4.4 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP). The seasonally adjusted growth is 5.2 per cent.

Data from the National Bureau of Statistics (BNS) released, on Monday, 16 September, shows that Moldova has had the highest quarterly growth in the last six quarters in Aprilie – June, following the 7.0 per cent advance in the fourth quarter of 2017. BNS has announced the results for the second quarter of 2019, indicating a value of MDL 49.7 bln of GDP.

According to BNS’s data, the biggest contribution to the economic growth has been the constructions, wholesale and retail trade, extractive and processing industry, info and communications. Totally, the gross added value on the economy has increased by 6.6 per cent, contributing to formation and growth of GDP by 86.6 per cent.

The volume of taxes on the product has increased by 3.2 per cent compared to similar period of 2018 and had a weight of 13.8 per cent when forming GDP.

From the point of view of GDP utilisation, the increase was due to the 6.9 per cent increase in gross fixed capital formation, which has a 30.5 per cent share in formation of GDP and 1.5 per cent increase, respectively, of final consumption of households. A negative contribution to the physical volume index of GDP had the net exports (–2.0 per cent), a consequence of the much accentuated contribution to formation of GDP of imports of goods and services (58.4 per cent) compared to the one of the exports of goods and services (30.2 per cent).

The official statistics also show that in the first semester, it was an increase of 5.2 per cent, as a result GDP rose to about MDL 90.9 bln.

The Ministry of Economy (MEI) forecasts a growth of 3.7 per cent in 2019, the World Bank (WB) of 3.4 per cent. The Independent Analytical Centre Expert – Grup is optimistic about the evolution of the Moldovan economy. According to it, in 2019 and 2020 the GDP of Moldova will increase by 4.4 – 4.5 per cent, mainly due to industry and trade.
